The Assistant Director of Human Resources is a senior-level leadership position that partners closely with the Director of Human Resources to drive structure, consistency, and people-centered practices across the hotel. This position supports the Human Resources department in all areas including colleague relations, recruitment, training, benefits administration, compliance, and employee engagement. Success in this role requires strong collaboration with hotel leadership and operational departments, along with a consistent on-site presence to support managers and colleagues Hyatt develops Assistant Directors to progress into the role of a Human Resource Director. Key Responsibilities
The Assistant Director of Human Resources supports the overall leadership of the HR department and serves as a primary operational resource for managers and colleagues. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Support the Director of Human Resources in daily departmental operations and serve as a key point of contact for HR-related inquiries.
- Coordinate the day-to-day workflow of the HR office, ensuring priorities, deadlines, follow-ups, and internal processes are handled efficiently and with structure.
- Supervise, support, and guide the HR team to ensure clear responsibilities, consistent practices, and a high level of internal service.
- Provide guidance and coaching to managers and colleagues regarding performance management, workplace concerns, policy interpretation, grievances, and other sensitive issues.
- Provide practical HR guidance to department heads and managers on people management, policies, procedures, and employment matters.
- Responsible for payroll processes, ensuring accurate preparation, review, and coordination of payroll-related information (variable pay, absences, working time, contract changes, Wisely cards, and other employee data).
- Contribute to recruitment, onboarding, training, development, internal communication, employee engagement, and colleague experience initiatives.
- Lead the creation, review, and maintenance of HR policies, procedures, and SOPs, ensuring information is accurate, updated, and centrally accessible.
- Identify opportunities to improve, streamline, and standardize HR processes to enhance consistency and efficiency across the hotel.
- Act as a bridge between HR strategy and hotel operations, translating priorities into clear actions, routines, and follow-up.
- Maintain the highest level of confidentiality, professionalism, accuracy, and discretion in all HR matters.
- Promote Hyatt's culture and values, fostering a respectful, fair, organized, and colleague-focused work environment.
- Assist the HR Director with labor relations matters and related topics.
- Ensure compliance with Hyatt standards, federal and state labor laws, collective bargaining agreement, and company policies.
- Manage the full process for leaves of absence, accommodations, and workers' compensation claims.
- Lead Talent Development and Retention initiatives, Colleague Experience Surveys, Action Plans, and departmental engagement efforts.
- Serve as the HR leader on duty in the absence of the Director of Human Resources.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Hospitality Management, Business Administration, or a related field preferred
- 2-5 years of Human Resources experience, ideally within hospitality or hotel operations
- Spanish fluency preferred but not required
- Prior supervisory or management experience
- Strong knowledge of employment laws, recruitment, colleague relations, and HR best practices
- Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills
- Proven ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism
- Experience with HRIS systems and Microsoft Office applications
- HR certification (SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR) preferred
- Demonstrated ability to train, coach, and counsel employees while supporting their development
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage priorities, deadlines, and multiple stakeholders
- Ability to drive projects to completion with accuracy and attention to detail
- Open-minded, innovative, and willing to challenge the status quo
- Ability to embody Hyatt's purpose by demonstrating authentic human care for guests and colleagues
- Strong working knowledge of collective bargaining agreements
- Proven experience in employee relations, HR administration, and payroll coordination
- Ability to navigate sensitive situations with professionalism, fairness, and discretion
